Accessible Kitchen Cabinetry in St Louis, MO Near Me

Accessible cabinetry adapts a kitchen so that reaching, gripping, and moving around the space is easier for people of different abilities. Common changes include pull-out shelves in base cabinets so items come to you, deep drawers in place of doors with hard-to-reach back corners, larger or lever-style pulls that are easier to grip, soft-close hardware, and lower or adjustable shelving in wall cabinets. Some households add open knee space at a sink or work area so a person can work from a seated position. Good lighting inside and under cabinets is also part of making a kitchen easier and safer to use.
Needs differ from person to person, so planning starts with how the people in your household actually use the kitchen. Someone with limited grip strength, someone using a wheelchair, and someone who wants to plan for aging in place will each need different solutions. Clearances, counter heights, and appliance placement all affect usability, and existing cabinet layouts may limit what can be adapted without structural changes. Accessibility guidelines can be a helpful reference, though residential requirements vary, and an occupational therapist can offer personalized advice where that is relevant.
